A pair of late 19th century sapphire and diamond 'dormeuse' earrings made circa 1890. The cushion-shaped sapphires of velvety blue hue are each set within a surround of old mine-cut diamonds, mounted in yellow gold.

These earrings are accompanied by a report from The Gem & Pearl Laboratory stating that the sapphires are natural, of Thai/Australian/East African origin, with no evidence of heat treatment. Report number 25681, dated 28 February 2025.

Hallmarks: Unmarked

Measurements: Sapphires approx 1.50 carats total. Diamonds approx 1.60 carats total. Cluster length 1.1cm. Earring length 1.7cm including hook

Condition: Very good, commensurate with age and use, under 10x magnification surface blemishes/naturals to two diamonds and a small surface reaching inclusion to one sapphire can be seen

"These are extremely comfortable to wear. 'Dormeuse' (or 'sleeper' in French) earrings became popular in the 1860s. They were more petite than the pendant and girandole earrings of previous decades and the curved design of the lever back fitting provided such comfort that ladies could sleep with them on."
