Jewellery Care Guide

Timeless treasures deserve timeless care.

While most antique jewels are durable, having stood the test of time, they should always be handled with great care. Please find below a few of our tips for cleaning and maintenance, to help keep your antique jewels sparkly and secure.

Cleaning Your Jewellery

Mind the sink!

Mind the sink!

Always clean your jewellery away from sinks, or ensure the plug is in place to avoid accidental loss.

Fingerprint-Free Shine

Fingerprint-Free Shine

Wipe gemstones with a lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints.

Gentle Cleaning

Gentle Cleaning

Clean delicate pieces softly to avoid damage. Use a soft toothbrush with warm, sudsy water to brush gently. Do not wet foiled-back antique pieces.

Ultrasonic Cleaner

Ultrasonic Cleaner

A deeper cleaning option for durable gemstones and jewels only, such as plain diamond jewellery and untreated sapphires and rubies. Not suitable for every type of jewel. Use a drop of mild dish liquid in the water instead of harsh solutions.

Important

Important

Never use ultrasonic cleaners for emeralds, pearls, opals or other porous, organic, or treated gemstones, nor for delicate settings, as they can be damaged.

When in Doubt

When in Doubt

Always verify the suitability of the cleaning method for your specific jewel.

Caring for your jewellery at home

Protecting your jewellery goes beyond cleaning. Follow these tips to ensure their long-lasting beauty.

The Final Touch

Put your jewellery on last, after your fragrance and skincare routine and remove it first before bed.

Safe Storage

Store your pieces in a cool, dry place. Use individual boxes, pouches or lined compartments to prevent scratches and tangles. Diamonds can scratch softer gems like emeralds and even each other.

Care During Wear

Avoid wearing antique jewellery during sports or chores. Gloves can help protect rings from knocks and harsh chemicals. Pearls and other porous jewels should always be removed before applying perfumes or creams.

Inspection

Check delicate settings frequently. If you have concerns, a trusted jeweller can identify and address any issues and provide a professional clean. If your piece has a natural antique patina, do ask the jeweller to preserve it.
